Our Farm League All Stars Advance to the State Tournament
After an impressive showing in the pre-district tournament in Jefferson, expectations were high for our Farm League All Stars. And they delivered!
After receiving a bye in round one, we topped Kershaw East 10-4 in our opener. Our second game wouldn't prove to be so easy, but it would prove to be exciting. Tied 12-12 after 6 innings, the game went to extra-innings. In the bottom of the 8th, Montell Brown ended the game with a walkoff hit.

Jefferson Wins the District 5 O-Zone Championship
After a first round loss to Chesterfield, Jefferson fought their way back to win six games and claim the 2015 District 5 championship. On the 8th day of the tournament, they were faced with having to beat an undefeated Cheraw team twice and they were up for the challenge.
Cheraw's pitching had been dominant all tournament and they saw no real decline in game one on Friday. However, it was the outstanding pitching of Jefferson's Jamie Parks that stole the show. Parks pitched a complete game shutout for the 4-0 win.
In the winner-take-all second game, Jefferson's bats, which had put up 33, 22, 18 and 16 in their four wins prior to Friday, came alive. Parks, game one's star on the mound, launched the game's final pitch into orbit for a 2-run blast. Jefferson won 14-3 in 5 innings.
Congratulations to Jefferson on winning the tournament championship and advancing to the state tournament in Union.
Also, we'd like to congratulate Cheraw on an outstanding showing in the district tournament. Prior to the final game, Cheraw's pitchers gave up 9 runs over 5 games.
Hartsville National would like to thank everyone who was involved in the tournament, including our umpires. The grounds crew at Byerly did a great job preparing the fields, especially during the wet weather we had during the tournament. The concession stand attendants met every order with a smile. The scorekeepers and park attendants also helped out tremendously in making this a successful tournament. Is anybody surprised that the umpires were the only ones willing to pose for a picture?

Cheraw and Jefferson to Play for District 5 O-Zone Championship
On Wednesday, Jefferson broke out their hot bats again and cruised to an 18-2 win over Chesterfield. A Landon Mills homerun in Chesterfield's last bat kept the game from being a shutout and broke a streak of over 50 unanswered runs by Jefferson.
In the nightcap, Cheraw's pitching continued its dominance in the tournament. Through 5 games, Cheraw's pitching staff has given up a total of five runs.
Jefferson and Cheraw will get underway at 6pm on July 2. If Jefferson wins, the two teams will play again approximately 30 minutes after the completion of the first game. If Cheraw wins the first game, we'll break out the sparkling grape juice.
A champion will be crowned on Thursday night (assuming Mother Nature cooperates). Will it be the booming bats of Jefferson? Or will it be the awesome arms of Cheraw? Either way, it'll be a great night of baseball at Byerly Park.

Lizzie Quinn Leads Pre-Game Meeting for O-Zone Tournament
Lizzie Quinn presided over the pre-game festivities at a recent O-Zone All Star Game at Byerly Park. Lizzie lead the coin flip for a game between Cheraw and Kershaw County East.
When asked about the experience, Lizzie said, "I was nervous at first." Quinn also added, "The coach told me to make it land on tails." Of course, Lizzie made that happen. Unfortunately for the Cheraw coach, one of Kershaw County East's players made the call in the air. However, being the home team wasn't enough to get the guys from Lugoff over the hump; Cheraw won the game 12-3.
Thanks for flipping the coin, Lizzie. You did a great job.
Lizzie is the daughter of Terry & Elizabeth Quinn. Her brother, Matthew, was a member of the 2015 Hartsville National O-Zone All Star Team.

Minor League All Stars Wrap Up Season in Bishopville
Our Minor League All Star Team experienced the highs and lows that come with playing the game of baseball. In their first tournament, the team blazed through the competition at the Tastebuds Invitational in Green Sea. Following that, the team ran into some tough competition in Lamar, which dropped their overall record to 3-2.
Following the Lamar tournament, the team rebounded with a tight win over Lamar in a scrimmage and then routed Darlington in a game that saw seven pitchers combine for a seven-inning 14-0 shutout.
Coach Russ Norwood's squad had an overall mark of 5-2 going into District 5 Subdistrict B in Bishopville. In the opener, the hosts lacked hospitality as they sent our guys home with a 14-3 defeat. The next game would prove to be the season-ender for our Minor Leaguers. Trailing 7-0 heading into the 6th and following a weather delay that included some lightning strikes close to the complex, our guys left it all on the field, but came up short. Kershaw County East won 7-3. The loss dropped our Minor League All Star Team's overall record to 5-4.

Minors Wish Coach Russ A Happy Birthday
The second day of the McManus-Watford Invitational in Lamar was also Coach Russ Norwood's birthday (as a courtesy, we won't reveal his age). The Minor League All Stars helped Coach Russ celebrate with a little birthday cake after their game.
Cake wasn't the only part of Coach Russ' birthday celebration. The Hartsville Northern League All Stars joined the National League squad in singing 'Happy Birthday' to Coach Russ after the game.
Of course, one cake to the face wasn't enough.
Again, Happy Birthday Coach Russ and congratulations to the Hartsville Northern All Stars for winning the 2015 McManus-Watford Invitational in Lamar.
